Local Adventures and Adventurers -
Went on a three day/two night circumnavigation of Santa Cruz last weekend with John and Jane McKinney. After motoring to Grace in SailTimes new Hunter 36, we had another two and a half days of great wind and sun.
The island is spectacular - green so dark that it looks black when a cloud passes over, bouquets of wildflowers on the slopes and meadows totally yellow with them.
Lots of wildlife: leaping whales (possibly a Killer female and baby) and Rizzo's Dolphins, which usually ignore us, but this time joined up for a 30 minute swim on our bow. They even stuck with us through several tack changes.
We explored most of the anchorages on the north and south shores, staying in Cueva Valdez the fist night and Smuggler's the second.
It was a great way to do ASA 104. I've got another one coming up next week with Jim and Karen Hervieux, but May has several openings if you're interested in an ASA qualification or simply an exploration out to the islands.
