8/18/06 - Sailing Channel Islands, Ventura, Oxnard

Scorpion Anchorage report

The water is warm and there are a lot of people in it.

At least yesterday the kayaking was fine with low winds, no swell and only small wind waves after 1400.

Of course, those conditions are pretty unusual into the afternoon and the forecast is for increasing winds through the weekend. Nevertheless, take your kayak - it should be smooth in the morning.

7/26 Notices to Mariners

The most recent notice contains the addition of several submerged submarine operating areas. Though none of these is in our immediate vicinity, you might be interested in the accompanying note:

"Boundary limits of Submerged Submarine Operating Areas are
shown by a solid purple line. As submarines may be submerged in these
areas, vessels should proceed with caution. During torpedo practice
firing, all vessels are cautioned to keep well clear of Naval Target
Vessels flying a large red flag at the highest masthead.

Heard on #16

A tug and a long tow were transiting north of the shipping lanes last week. A sailboat appeared to be on a course that would take him near the lash-up that stretched a quarter mile or more.

The sailor hailed the tug and said "This is the sailing vessel Blah Blah; I'm on your starboard bow at 2 miles. I will pass astern of your tow."

"Roger, out," replied the tug.

That certainly minimized the #16 palaver. The last time I was in that position, the tug hailed me, asked my intentions, then he told me his. It took quite a bit of jawing. Probably irritating to those who like quiet. This guy cut all that short with 1 succinct call, which relieved the tug driver's mind and did not jam the frequency.

And, speaking of on-air blather, Big Tuna and Killafish, can you guys come up with a tactical frequency and portable vhf's on which to monitor them? You're not doing any thing wrong with your constant calls on 16 to switch, but you could reduce the noise pollution if you all monitored 68 (or other blather-allowed freq) in addition to 16.

No dumping areas:
The lastest Notice to Mariners has defined a new No Dumping area near Channel Islands Harbor/
Pt. Heuenme. http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/lnm/d11/default.htm

By no dumping, they mean no maceration, pumping of head holding tanks etc. etc.

No idea how this will be enforced, but it's near our beach, so I'm going to use the pump out in the
harbor even if the rule is unenforceable.

Conditions this weekend:

Friday...W WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT OR LESS. W SWELL 2 FT
AT 9 SECONDS. PATCHY FOG LATE IN THE MORNING. SLIGHT CHANCE OF TSTMS.
.

Friday Night...W WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 3 FT IN THE EVENING...

TSTMS.

SAT...W WIND 10 TO 20 KT. WIND WAVES 3 TO 4 FT. W SWELL 2 FT AT
10 SECONDS. SLIGHT CHANCE OF TSTMS.

SAT NIGHT...W WIND 10 TO 20 KT...BECOMING NW 10 TO 15 KT AFTER
MIDNIGHT. WIND WAVES 3 FT IN THE EVENING...BECOMING 2 FT OR LESS.
NW SWELL 3 TO 5 FT. SLIGHT CHANCE OF TSTMS.

SUN...WIND VARIABLE 10 KT OR LESS...BECOMING NW 10 KT IN THE
AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES 2 FT OR LESS. NW SWELL 3 TO 5 FT. SLIGHT
CHANCE OF TSTMS.

SUN NIGHT...W WIND 10 KT IN THE EVENING...BECOMING VARIABLE 10 KT
OR LESS. WIND WAVES 2 FT OR LESS. W SWELL 2 TO 3 FT. SLIGHT CHANCE
OF TSTMS.

Local notes:
Shoaling is getting more severe N. of the Channel Islands N. Jetty. Buoys mark the general position, but we were very close to breaking water just outside of them. Give the area wide berth.

Channel markers in Ventura Marina have been shifted - or so it seems - probably due to seasonal shoaling.

Sail Channel Islands: Good times on Sancerre

Heard on #16

We got a new vhf with a wireless mic for the cockpit. Until now, we were not particularly aware of much of the traffic on the hailing frequency, but now it's right at the throttle quadrant and it seems to be squawking all the time.

We've learned some interesting stuff:

Vessel Assist is doing a great business.
When the Coast Guard responds to a Pan, Pan or even a Mayday, one of their first questions is "are you in immediate danger."

If not, you're probably going to wait for Vessel Assist or some other private towing operation to come to your rescue.

The other thing we learned is that the CG doesn't use their charts in their initial effort to find the victims because the next question is what is you Lat/Long. Even if you report your position in the old manner, 2 nm south of Home Harbor, they're still going to ask for Lat/Long. I think you could be tied up to their pier and they'd still query you for Lat/Long

We listened to a very interesting conversation yesterday between a power boat that was DIW about 15 miles at sea and a would-be rescuer, not the USCG, in this case.

The captain of the stricken boat was having serious difficulty figuring out how to find his present position on the GPS readout.

We don't know why that was, for sure, but a couple of possible answers:

Didn't have the data bar turned on
Hadn't activated the "Find Ship" button
Was looking at the Lat/Long of a waypoint
Had just turned it on and was waiting for satellite acquisition

He was a long way from home, the visibility was bad and getting worse and he was ready to start whimpering. On the other end, the rescuers were plotting his position based on the coordintes he'd sent, and were frustrated because they plotted out in Indiana, not near the Channel Islands, which he had left an hour or so before.

Draw your own conclusions about what information you'll need to provide should you need some assistance.

No dumping areas:
The lastest Notice to Mariners has defined a new No Dumping area near Channel Islands Harbor/

7/6/06 - Sailing Channel Islands, Ventura, Oxnard

A week in, on or under the water

Adventures and Adventurers -

We - Chris Tucker, Tom - my son and Colin - Chris'son, spent a week sailing the BVI. Chris was our admiral, a title bestowed because of his vast sailing experience in the region, and guided our floatilla of six Sailtime/Sunsail boats through the region. He cleverly picked anchorages that were progressively more spectacular and dive spots that were alive with new-growth coral and spectacular fauna.

The trip was the culminating experience for the Sailtime crews as they completed the final requirements in the Novice to Captain program.

For more information about Sailing with us, call Capt. Dan at 805.750.7828

SailTime Channel Islands Sailing School
Topher Means completed ASA 104 with an overnight to Santa Cruz. The trip tested both of us: We left in visibility of abou 3/4 mile. By the time we near Platform Grace, the vis. was less than 1/2 mile. Just inside of a half mile on radar, the platform loomed into sight, though only the bottom half was visible. The cranes disappeared into the Marine Layer.

Rainbow's electronic suite is quite excellent and with MARPA, we were able to safely transit the high-speed shipping lanes. With MARPA, it's easy to tell if a ship presents a hazard and simple to figure how to get out of the way.

Beats hell out of the grease pencil marks on the scope that I learned in a destroyer's CIC in the last millenium.

On the ladder to captaincy: Jesse Dowler and David Gross completed ASA 103 and checkouts in Sailtime boats. You'll likely see them near Channel Islands as they practice their skills in preparation for island cruising.

Local Adventures and Adventurers -

We've been out playing on our new Jeanneau and had a most excellent weekend circumnavigating Santa Cruz. We'd intended to anchor at Johnson's Lee on Santa Rosa, but that would have required an hour's motoring and we didn't want to pass up the chance to fly down the Santa Cruz channel with 25- 35 knots on our beam.

We anchored at Morse Point on day two having spent the first night in Pelican. We were the only ones at Morse and, for reasons we don't understand, found the premiere spot against the west wall open in Pelican.

Anchored in 40 feet with about 230 feet of rode on both bown and stern. Set the anchor alarm for 60' and never saw movement of more than about 5.

Off to the BVI for a week with Sailtime, so standby for some great pics when we return.

The charter and lesson schedule is heavily booked for July. If you want either one, give us a call soon. After Friday, send an e-mail with your preferred dates. You won't hear back until about 6/28 and we'll honor the reservations based on the date/time of receipt.

Good sailing....

Outlook summary for the weekend:

Some sporty winds (up to 25 kts) and a bit of fog/Marine Layer

SailTime Channel Islands Sailing School
Jim and Karen Hervieux had a great ASA 104 a couple of weeks ago ... some terrific wind, mostly clear skies and leaping whales. The one at the top cleared the water more than 20 times in 30 minutes.

Local Adventures and Adventurers -

We've been out playing on our new Jeanneau. It's twice as much boat as Wiley - 12 tons as compared to 6 tons. We're still getting used to the turning radius and acceleration characteristics. We missed the big blow on Wed. and had to settle with 15 kts. or so yesterday. We're looking forward to more challenging conditions as we head to Windy Lane, Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa 9-11 June

Those of you who sailed with me last year in Wiley can book Sancerre from now until August at last year's rates. Just give me a call, tell me your dates and we'll lock that part of the calendar for you.

We only have a couple of pics of her, but more will be coming.

Here's our new baby - a 2002 Sun Odyssey 45.2 from Jeanneau. She's ready for charter. You can have Capt. Dan take you out for the day or you can explore the Channel Islands for up to 7 days. Go to Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Catalina - anywhere you want from Pt. Conception southward.

Jim and Karen Hervieux head out on ASA 104 this weekend ... if there is any wind in the forecast.

Local Adventures and Adventurers -

Our huge adventure is our new boat - yet unamed, she's a 45.2 Sun Odyssey from Jeanneau. A 2002 boat, she had only 175 hour or so on the engine when we met her. She needed a good scrub, some waxing topside and a few thousand bucks worth of upgrades to meet the survey requirements, but we're almost there and ready to resume charter ops.

Those of you who sailed with me last year in Wiley can book No Name from now until August at last year's rates. Just give me a call, tell me your dates and we'll lock that part of the calendar for you.

We only have a couple of pics of her, but more will be coming.

Buzz Hall ASA 101

Local Adventures and Adventurers -

Went on a three day/two night circumnavigation of Santa Cruz last weekend with John and Jane McKinney. After motoring to Grace in SailTimes new Hunter 36, we had another two and a half days of great wind and sun.

The island is spectacular - green so dark that it looks black when a cloud passes over, bouquets of wildflowers on the slopes and meadows totally yellow with them.

Lots of wildlife: leaping whales (possibly a Killer female and baby) and Rizzo's Dolphins, which usually ignore us, but this time joined up for a 30 minute swim on our bow. They even stuck with us through several tack changes.

We explored most of the anchorages on the north and south shores, staying in Cueva Valdez the fist night and Smuggler's the second.

It was a great way to do ASA 104. I've got another one coming up next week with Jim and Karen Hervieux, but May has several openings if you're interested in an ASA qualification or simply an exploration out to the islands.

Local Adventures and Adventurers -
I was invited to accompany Rich and Lori Boren on their first cruise aboard Third Day, their Pearson ketch. Our mission was to move her from her former home in Santa Cruz harbor to their new mooring near Pismo Beach.

You'd think that would be a downhill joyride. Well, the hill was turned upside down that week and we had to power much of the way into brisk winds and - at least sometimes - pretty big seas.

Rich, Lori and I learned a lot about their boat and got a lot of practical navigation experience. But I'll use Rich's words to tell the story. It begins here and continues on my web page via a link.

Voyage of the Third Day

by Rich Boren

29 March 06

0800hrs

Capt Dan Ryder arrives in Pismo Beach, Ca right on time to begin delivery of THIRD DAY (TD). My wife Lori and I purchased our new sailboat, a 1978 Pearson 365 Ketch, two months ago and have been frantically preparing for this delivery trip. THIRD DAY was located in Santa Cruz, Ca and she needed to be taken to her new home on a mooring in beautiful Avila Bay in Port San Luis, Ca. We have made all the plans, taken the ASA 105 Coastal Navigation class from our great delivery captain and sailing instructor (Capt Dan), and spent all the necessary money on upgrades to safely make the 130nm trip south. Our plan for today was simple, drive the rental car from Pismo Beach to Monterey Airport and from there a good friend of Capt Dan’s would drive us to TD in Santa Cruz. From Santa Cruz, we would sail the 23.1 nm across the bay. This was planned to be a perfect shake-down cruise prior to heading around the point on a 83 nm trip to San Simeon anchorage. Then the final leg of the voyage would be a leisurely sail from San Simeon to my waiting mooring ball in Avila Bay. The prevailing winds should keep us on a beam to broad reach the whole trip with the swell running gently with us the whole way.

Aren’t all plans simple when they are just plans? Plans at least can serve as a yardstick between what you wanted and hoped to happen and what you were forced to actually contend with. Sometimes cruel beast called reality sets in, as we would later find out.

Local Notice to Mariners

There has been no official notice, but dredging operations have begun in Channel Islands Harbor.
Yesterday, 3/16, the dredge was right on the shoal that currently blocks 1/2 the channel. They also had massive amounts of pipeline positioned just inside the breakwater. The Harbormaster had and may still have a boat stationed near by to direct traffic. Contact Dredge Morris or Channel Islands Harborpatrol on #16 for traffic advisories.

Local Notice to Mariners

Dredging in Santa Barbar Harbor 2/28 to 4/15

Severe shoaling in mouth of Channel Islands Harbor (finally showed up in print this week). See link above for details. Last time we were in the area, four white with orange-marking buoys had been placed to mark the shoal.

Light List 3720 - Buoy #9 in Ventura is a Green Can (not black as it has been listed for a decade or so).

We also reported the missing Red Triangle on the South Jetty.

Dredging in Ventura: Watch out for the dredge Norris in Ventura Harbor. Spoil lines extend across the channel, but are visible in daytime and lighted at night with yellow flashers. Contact the dredge Norris on #16 if you are at all uncertain of how to pass safely. They've got numerous workboats coming and going, none of which look very maneuverable, nor does the crew spend much effort on lookout duty. Be ready to give them a sound signal when they show up on your side of the channel.

Local Notice to Mariners
Capt Dan's notices:for reasons unknown, the Coast Guard STILL isn't paying much attention to our local waters and has failed to note the dredging operation STILL in progress in Ventura Harbor. (Even though we called them right after the LNM were published last week). They were also extremely late in reporting the building shoal in Channel Islands, but they and the Harbor Patrol have stationed a watch during daylight hours.

We reported both to the proper authorities and got little more than a shrug. If you see hazards, pass them to the CG, but also pass them to me. (Or just to me and I'll pass them on, if you wish.)

Anyhow - watch out for the dredge Norris now out of mouth of Ventura Harbor. Local Notice to Mariners
It's taken a week or so, but the Coast Guard is finally broadcasting a warning about the shoals that have devleoped near the south jetty of Channel Islands Harbor. Apparently it's up to us to inform CG of anything that is a hazard ... even if the hazard is at their own doorstep.

Concerning the shoals: be very wary, particularly at low tide. When returning, head for a mid-point or slightly left between the jettys. When departing, be aware that we have less than half our normal channel to deal with. Stay well right. If you're sailing and have an auxilliary, we recommend cranking it up for departure.

Survey vessels operating in Ventura vicinity with long tows. Operation from now until 30 Jan 06
No additional notices for the immediate Channel Islands, Ventura, Oxnard area
